The Animal Care and Customer Service Assistant is responsible for performing animal care, reception, and office support duties at the Everett Animal Shelter. Duties include receiving, caring for, and releasing animals; responding to inquiries from the public; maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the facility; and maintaining accurate records and files. 

 The work is of a regular and recurring nature following specific and well-established policies, procedures, and work standards. The individual carries out routine assignments independently and is responsible for his/her own work product and for maintaining high quality standards and excellent customer service. Significant deviations from routine tasks are referred to a supervisor or other regular employees who are normally available to advise or assist as necessary.  Employees in this classification must have the ability to use good judgment and are responsible for determining the correct way to handle a variety of situations. They are mainly responsible for their own assigned workload, but they may frequently provide guidance and support to Animal Shelter volunteers and may assist or train new or temporary employees. The duties of this classification are performed under the general supervision of the Animal Services Manager or designee who may review the work performed through observation, direct inspection, and conferences with employees on the basis of established performance criteria.

 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Paid or unpaid animal care experience in an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, or equivalent professional environment; AND at least two years of customer service experience that included the use of computers; OR

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months of hire, a valid Washington State Euthanasia Certification and the ability to maintain for the duration of employment.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid, unrestricted (except for vision), Washington State Driver License and the ability to maintain for the duration of employment.

  • Must be able and willing to work shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays and to respond to off-hour call outs.

EXAMINATION STEPS

  • The Supplemental Questions will be weighted 30% and will be blind rated. Please treat the Supplemental Questions as a test. Also please be aware that straight copy/paste AI generated answers tend to not score well.

  • A limited number of the top-qualifying applicants will be called to an oral panel evaluation (weighted 70%), tentatively scheduled for May 8, 2024.

  • All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process.  

 IMPORTANT NOTES

  • A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.  

  • The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

  • Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214 or other official military separation documentation that clearly indicates an honorable discharge from military service on or before the date filing closes.
