The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently looking for enthusiastic engineers who have a passion for creative solutions, innovation, and proven successful in collaborative efforts. These engineers can be entry level and journey level engineers, as well as college students projected to graduate from an engineering program within six months of this posting, to work on some of the most important infrastructure projects in Washington State.  North Central Regions’ Transportation Engineer positions contribute to the preliminary design engineering functions for a wide variety of project types in the Scoping office.  The incumbents identify and develop solutions to a wide variety of needs on our State’s Transportation System.  This is accomplished by collecting field and electronic data, communicating with concerned parties, preparing estimates, performing benefit cost analyses, developing reports, and producing other documents that are used to improve the safety, quality, and capacity of the State’s Transportation System.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role you will:

  • Prepare project synopses, estimates, and schedules based on the statewide scoping instructions to create projects.
  • Evaluate accident, traffic, pavement, hydraulics, unstable slopes, bridge, environmental, utility, right of way and other data to define projects.
  • Collect and evaluate field data and/or survey data to determine quantities, elevations, coordinates, grades, and curve data. 
  • Perform collision and benefit cost analysis reports. 
  • Document project design standards. 
  • Utilize computer software to determine project impacts, create preliminary plan sheets, estimate quantities and costs and schedule projects.
  • Perform general inspection on highway construction projects including materials inspection and testing.
  • Assist with community engagement and partners with various local agencies and the public to establish transportation needs including such modes as bicycles, pedestrians, and vehicles.
  • Assist in the preparation of agreements.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

Please note this position has been approved for in-training; therefore, it may be filled at the Transportation Engineer 1 or 2 level.  
 
Required qualifications for the Transportation Engineer 1 level:
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or closely related field such as Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Construction Engineering, and Construction management:  NOTE:  A Mechanical Engineering degree is acceptable as well, however, the duties performed in these roles are primarily Civil/Construction/Transportation related. OR
  • Certificate as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT): OR
  • One (1) year experience as a Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent.
AND
  • Experience communicating effectively to multiple audiences both orally and in writing.
  • Experience using standard software to prepare records, drawings, and documents.
  • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner. 
  • The ability to manipulate and transport up to 35 pounds.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
Candidates working towards a degree will be considered for graduation dates within 6 months of posting.
 
Required qualifications for the Transportation Engineer 2 level:
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, or equivalent experience in entry-level civil engineering; OR
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) and one (1) year experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, or equivalent experience in entry-level engineering.
AND
  • Experience communicating effectively to multiple audiences both orally and in writing.
  • Experience using standard software to prepare records, drawings, and documents.
  • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • The ability to manipulate and transport up to 35 pounds.
  • Valid Driver’s License.            
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT), or a bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • Knowledge of project development work such as: field reviews; evaluating designs; data analysis; preparing/reviewing reports, estimates, plans, specifications, and special provisions.
  • Proficient knowledge of project management practices.
  • Knowledge of basic transportation engineering principles dealing with surveying, roadway geometrics, materials testing and sampling, and computer applications (such as Microstation and In-Roads).
  • Knowledge of the surrounding area.
Important Notes 
  • This opportunity is also open for ‘in-training’, which means that depending on your qualifications, you may be offered a position at a lower level along with a formal on-the-job training plan to complete within a specified timeframe. Successful completion of the training plan will result in a promotion to the next level within the job class series, and a minimum 5% pay increase!  
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions throughout the Region per business needs.
  • The salary range listed includes the legislative approved general wage increase of 3%, effective on July 1, 2024.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
