JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, employee will oversee public safety at the Surf ‘n Slide Water Park and other duties as advised by the manager on duty.  This temporary seasonal position will assist in operations of the facility with other temporary lifeguard staff, and reports directly to the manager on duty.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Lifeguard as needed in a conscientious manner while attempting to improve the quality of the aquatic program
• Completion of in-service training/training material for aquatic positions
• Respond quickly, effectively and efficiently to all emergency situations
• Communicate with lifeguards and public
• To report fully all accidents/concerns involving any aspect of the facility to the Recreation Supervisor or Assistant Aquatic Manager
• Process incident reports
• Teach lessons as needed in a conscientious manner while attempting to improve the quality of the aquatic program 
• Complete and process American Red Cross paperwork with the local chapter
• Perform other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledge of water safety procedures and lifeguarding techniques (CPRFPR, first Aid) according to current American Red Cross standards
• Knowledge of basic mathematical functions
• Ability to Interact with general public in a manner consistent with providing high quality customer service
• Ability to enforce regulations in a fair, impartial and polite manner
• Ability to deal with staff and public in a professional, team-oriented manner
• Ability to anticipate and prevent accidents
• Ability to work cooperatively with others

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

     ENVIRONMENT:

• Indoor and outdoor environment
• Working varied hours including weekends, evenings and holidays

     PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

• Swim 500 meters using crawl and breaststroke in under 12 minutes
• Swim 20 yards and retrieve a 10 lb. brick from bottom of diving tank 
• Tread water with a 10 lb. brick for 2 minutes
• Climbing
• Standing for extended periods of time
• Lifting heavy objects weighing fifty (50) pounds
• Walking, jogging and running
• Reaching overhead and above shoulders
• Kneeling or crouching
• Hearing and speaking to communicate information
• Reading and writing to communicate information
• Seeing to monitor activities
• Sensing hot and cold
• Smelling/sensing chlorine or chemically unbalanced water

      HAZARDS:

• Exposure to dissatisfied or abusive individuals
• Exposure to heat
• Exposure to electrical equipment
• Exposure to moving and sharp equipment
• Exposure to cold
• Exposure to cleaning materials and chemicals
• Exposure to body fluids
• Exposure to distressed, non-swimming, and ill people
• Exposure to pool related chemicals (Chlorine, Acids, etc.)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience lifeguarding highly desirable
• Experience interacting with public highly desirable
• Current American Red Cross First Aid/CPRFPR and Lifeguard Training are required
• American Red Cross WSI highly desirable
• All applicants must be able to successfully pass a background check process which includes reference checks and criminal history checks, or other.
