Are you passionate about environmental sustainability and effective communication? We're looking for an Internal Communications Specialist to join our award-winning Public Affairs team at the Department of Natural Resources & Parks (DNRP) Director's Office.

This is an exciting opportunity to engage a dedicated workforce that is restoring salmon habitat, operating major infrastructure that protects Puget Sound marine life, transforming waste management to reduce carbon emissions, and enhancing regional parks and trails – all of which contribute to the quality of life in King County.

About the Role:

We are excited to introduce the new role of Internal Communications Specialist (Communicational Specialist IV) within the DNRP Director’s Office. This role, anticipated to be at least two years in duration, will build and manage the communications infrastructure needed to better engage our 2,000 professionals.

As a member of our Public Affairs team, you will serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on the best opportunities and platforms to connect with employees. You will develop and execute strategic communication plans that deliver clear, consistent messages to employees, making sure they have the information, resources, and support they need to succeed each day.  

We have a talented, diverse workforce that includes wastewater treatment operators, ecologists, parks maintenance staff, marine biologists, water quality experts, transfer station operators, civil engineers, and more – all of whom contribute to our mission as a natural resource agency. Half of our employees work on site without easy access to laptops or desktop computers, so our leadership team needs an innovative, dynamic communications professional who can help us connect with employees wherever they are.

In addition to producing clear, compelling content – that can include email newsletters, videos, virtual meetings, and presentations, in-person gatherings, onsite visits, workshops, and more – we need someone who can establish trusted sources for employee information. We need a strategic-level communications expert who can unify our existing platforms and create new ones that reach the right people at the right place at the right time.

This position performs work remotely and onsite.  

About the Team:

DNRP Public Affairs is a high-performing team thatlast year from the National Association of Government Communicators. The talented team of storytellers leads department-wide communications, including news media, social media, videography, and photography. They organize and lead high-profile press tours and briefings for the County Executive and County Councilmembers and work closely with the Executive Office and other Cabinet agencies.  

The team also provides strategic direction for each of the department’s four divisions as well as major initiatives for climate action, land conservation, local food, clean water, and healthy habitat.

This new Internal Communications Specialist will fill a critical gap in the department by improving engagement among our workforce, making sure they have the information, resources, and support they need to achieve our mission.
