This is an on-site/in-person, project position funded through July 2025.

 

Facility Maintenance Technician

 

We're seeking a skilled Facility Maintenance Technician to join our team. In this role, you'll be responsible for maintaining and supporting the operational integrity of our facility, including laboratory and support areas. Your work will ensure the seamless functioning of our equipment, systems, and infrastructure, enabling us to provide timely services to our clients and internal departments.

This position is classified internally as a Maintenance Mechanic 2 (MM2)

 

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain repair list and repair facility systems.
  • Coordinate work impacts with staff, to minimize disruptions, and maintain transparency.
  • Complete work orders for carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical tasks.
  • Coordinate project work for contractors and ensure completion.
  • Clean various areas of the building and grounds.
  • Respond to work orders for restroom maintenance issues, room setups, and furniture moving.
  • Perform planned maintenance tasks on various equipment.
  • Maintain building plumbing, electrical, mechanical, steam, chiller water systems, HVAC systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, fire systems, gas meter calibration, safety shower and eyewashes, CCTV, and security systems.
  • Use electronic, digital analytic tools, computer analysis, and data for diagnostics and solutions.
  • Monitor building automation and Siemens, and Alerton systems.
  • Verify asset documentation and work with surplus management for organization and shipment.
  • Maintain asset inventory on Computerized Maintenance Management System, Excel, and Word documents.
  • Initiate procurement requests by researching part numbers, costs, and/or vendor information.

 

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • 2 or more years of experience performing a variety of building and/or laboratory maintenance duties.
  • Experience performing preventive Mechanical and electrical maintenance.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating mechanical and diagnostic tools.
  • Experience in maintaining repair lists, completing work orders, and documenting maintenance activities.

 

Preferred Experience and Desired Qualifications:

  • HVAC Certification
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship or trade program in electrical engineering, maintenance, or similar trade program.
  • Completion of a workplace safety certification
  • Experience working in a health services or laboratory environment.
  • Experience working with pneumatic, hydraulic and steam equipment.
  • A demonstrated understanding of safety regulations and protocols related to building maintenance, ensuring the safety of employees, contractors, vendors, and visitors.
  • Experience operating building automation and surveillance systems.

This is an in-person position. You will work onsite at the Washington State Public Health Laboratory (PHL) located in Shoreline, WA.

Job Setting and Hazards: 

  • You'll be working in the lab onsite
  • Expect to move around a lot, going through buildings and outdoor areas. You may need to climb ladders taller than 10 feet. You'll also handle heavy equipment, over 50 pounds.
  • You’ll outdoor work in all kinds of weather, dealing with things like ice and snow removal, floods, and roof work, even when it's really hot, cold, or wet.
  • You'll also work with machinery and do some minor electrical tasks.
  • In the lab, you'll work with equipment like fume hoods and biosafety cabinets, as well as fuels and chemicals.
  • You'll need to wear a respirator and work in a highly controlled lab environment, called biosafety level 3.

Schedule: 

  • Your work hours are Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM. Sometimes, you'll be on call according to the facilities rotation schedule.

Travel: 

  • Occasionally, you'll travel within the state. When you travel for work, you might go alone or with someone else, and you might stay overnight, either in-state or out-of-state.
  • If you're driving for work, you need to be legally allowed to drive a state or privately-owned vehicle, or you can use alternative transportation provided by the state.

Tools and Equipment: 

  • The agency will provide all the main tools and equipment you need for your work.

Customer Interactions: 

  • You'll interact with various people daily, including internal lab staff, contractors, tradespeople, equipment reps, and other external customers. This could be face-to-face, on the phone, or through email.

Other:

  • You might need to take some classes as required, like Electrical Basics/Troubleshooting, Pump Maintenance and Repair, or Building Operator Certification. These will be covered by your employer.
