The Sr Distribution Center Manager provides strategic leadership to the Product Distribution Center.  This person serves a key role in leading our distribution center strategy, execution of key performance indicators, and driving improved service levels to our stores and customers.  This role will support the startup of new multi-channel facility along with the development of new processes to leverage new best in class systems.  Leads all operational activities of the department including strategy development and implementation; operating plans and budgets; value generation initiatives; policies, procedures, systems, and reporting. Builds and manages a high performance team to achieve department objectives. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for team members; adhere to safety programs, procedures, and policies
  • Motivate people to give their best efforts by goal setting, coaching and communicating performance expectations, offering recognition and holding people accountable for results
  • Ensure the successful startup of a key strategic multi-channel facility within the Discount Tire Supply Chain network
  • Drive key vendor relationships that support strategic alliances to scale operations while optimizing cost
  • Plan, manage, and execute distribution center related functions to achieve goals consistent with supply chain vision and provide excellent service to internal and external customers
  • Monitor and manage expenses aligned to distribution operating budget; develop strategy and actions necessary to manage variances
  • Be accountable for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing our distribution center by monitoring implementation and practice to ensure compliance
  • Ensure associates and management staff have proper access to necessary tools to perform their assigned duties
  • Provide distribution center team members with training required to complete their job along with cross-training team members to provide development opportunities for career advancement
  • Lead and provide direction to site workload planning and volume forecasting including staffing, equipment and space utilization
  • Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of facility and all material handling equipment inside the facility
  • Analyze data to determine appropriate actions needed to optimize results
  • Determine and execute the most efficient sequence of operations, workflow, and methods to maximize assets and team member utilization
  • Lead and execute best practices to promote team member engagement and enable a high-performing workforce to contribute to the company’s strategic growth and business objectives
  • Role model behaviors aligned to a values based, customer-centric, high performing culture with an emphasis on embracing our competencies and delivering with subject matter expertise
  • Partner across the organization to coach and develop leaders to ensure they are building culture action plans that best align to our people strategies and business initiatives
  • Provides direction and feedback on employee goals and achievements. Conducts performance reviews.
  • Communicates clear job expectations, goals and development opportunities to employees.
  • Prepares employee development plans. Coaches, counsels and leads department employees.
  • Serves as an escalation point for interpersonal and operational employee challenges.
  • Monitors department projects to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and to agreed quality level. Monitors and adjusts employee workloads.
  • Gathers, tracks and reports department attainment of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to upper management.
  • Ensures Company procedures are followed, including the tracking and publishing of metrics.
  • Works collaboratively across departments to identify and resolve risks, conflicts and challenges, recommends resolution and implementing process improvements.
  • Stays current on the latest industry technologies, trends, and strategies; brings forward solutions and serves as a Trusted Expert.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • 8 or more years of combined experience in material handling, automation, manufacturing, supply chain, process improvement, and/or distribution in an omni-channel environment.
  • 5 or more years of supervisory or management experience
  • Experience with distribution center startups preferred
  • Experience with warehouse management system implementations and/or upgrades
  • Strong people skills
  • Be experienced in managing both company employee based and 3PL/4PL warehouse teams with a background in hiring, training, motivating, and resolving employee relations issues
  • Possess detailed understanding of financial statements and resulting cost implications
  • Experience in developing and managing preventative maintenance programs
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to produce high quality and accurate work products
  • Must be able to operate with sound reasoning and judgement coupled with a high level of resourcefulness
  • Experience in working with data to analyze root causes, implementing long term solutions and improve operational outcomes by using continuous improvement methodologies
  • Experience with DC technology (WMS, OMS, TMS, LMS)
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills (Six-Sigma, LEAN)
  • Strong data analytical skills (Excel, Access, SQL)

 

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain or a related field or equivalent experience is required.
  • Professional certifications are a plus.

Work Days

Normal work days are Monday through Friday. Occasional Saturdays and Sundays may be necessary.

 

Work Hours

Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additional hours may be necessary.
