ASSISTANT COOK -CHS (2024-2025 School Year)

Reports To: Food Services Supervisor, CHS Head Cook and Building Principal

Job Goal: To serve the students attractive and nutritious meals in accordance with state standards. To maintain an atmosphere of efficiency, cleanliness, and friendly customer service and meet all district, local, and federal safety rules.

Schedule: 6 hours per day; 192 days per year

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Required- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Preferred- previous experience with large-scale cooking and food preparation/serving.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers, students, staff, and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board Policies. Ability to operate commercial-grade food service equipment safely and efficiently. Must operate kitchen according to food safety plan and food code requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Follow direction from Head Cook
Assist in the preparation and serving of meals
Assume responsibility of kitchen as head cook in head cook’s absence, including paperwork
Operate all kitchen equipment in a safe manner
Wash dishes and clean equipment as needed
Daily cleaning duties as assigned
Work well with students in the kitchen, co-workers, principal, teachers, supervisor and others
Follow standardized menus and recipes
Perform other duties as might be reasonably assigned
Maintain good personal hygiene
Appropriate dress and hair restraint
Follow portion control protocol as directed
Prepare, receive and store food following the districts food safety plan and local and federal safety rules
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

Math Requirements

Regular use of math including:
Simple fractions such as measurements, ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
Ability to correctly count money and make change
Adjusting recipes based on meal counts
Appropriately use volume, weight and measurement of food items
Language Requirements

Ability to read and follow large scale recipes and follow menus
Ability to communicate written and verbal instructions
Ability to speak to small groups
Ability to complete reports and correspondence

Reasoning Requirement

Ability to apply general guidelines to a wide variety of situations with several variables
Think quickly to address situations
Attention to detail is essential

Additional Requirements

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds as described in the essential functions section

Maintain food safety and food code requirements
Receive supplies/food in accordance with food safety and food code requirements
Must pass a criminal background check that meets required state, federal, and Clarkston School District standards
May have occasional evening hours during school functions as assigned (voluntary)

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as milk crates, frozen foods, canned food, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and color vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and other workers. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard. The employee has a greater than average risk of getting a minor injury such as a cut or burn while performing the duties of this job.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provision of the Board Policy on Evaluation of Personnel and Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Terms of Employment:

182 days per year, + 11 paid holidays
Pay and benefits in accordance with contract between Clarkston School District and International Union of Operating Engineers
