The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Bridge Electrical and Electronic Systems Specialist 3 (In-Training) in Medina, WA. Medina, WA is located on the Eastside Region of King County. As a senior technical specialist this position supports WSDOT’s mission by applying advanced technical knowledge to perform inspections on new transportation and highway construction, or devises methods and processes to resolve the most complex issues in the maintenance, installation, and repair of systems proficient in electrical and fire life safety systems. This position will primarily lead and direct the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of these systems on the 520 Floating Bridge. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment with focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Note: This position includes an approved in-training plan; therefore, it may be filled at the Trainee, 1, 2 or 3 level. The salaries for these classifications are as follows:
 
Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -Trainee: $56,914 - $69,312 annually depending on qualifications.

Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 1: $72,865 - $88,741 annually depending on qualifications.
Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 2: $80,438 - $98,015 annually depending on qualifications.
Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3: $84,483 - $102,942 annually depending on qualifications.


What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Electrical and Electronics System Specialist 3 will:

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of electrical and electronic systems associated with the SR 520 Floating Bridge.
  • Work on and around energized electrical equipment utilizing standard and specialized test equipment such as volt-ohm meter, ammeter, megger, tic tracer, thermal sensor, time domain reflectometer, and vendor-supplied diagnostic equipment, and computerized flow charts and schematics. 
  • Verify and ensure NEC (National Electrical Code) compliance, load calculations, conductor and component sizing and rating, and updating and drawing electrical prints. 
  • Research, plan, and purchase equipment as needed. 
  • Perform work safely with minimal or no supervision and oversee others doing electrical work. 
  • Work in high-volume traffic locations, marine settings, near electrical hazards, in confined spaces, at heights to exceed 100 feet, over water, and in all types of weather. 
  • Work around unhoused populations. 
  • Ability to manipulate and transport 50 lbs.
  • Operate, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair the following bridge electrical equipment.
  • Perform work around medium voltage distribution systems up to 15kv.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity at the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -Trainee level, the following are required:
  • High School Diploma or GED 
 
To be considered for this opportunity at the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -1 level, the following are required:
  • Two (2) years (approximately 4,000 hours) of relevant experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
OR
  • Completion of equivalent, relevant, professional formal training through an electrical apprenticeship program, accredited electrical or electronics training program, vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronic training, or an agency-specific in-training plan. 
OR
  • Associate degree in electrical or electronics technology may substitute for some education or experience.
 
To be considered for this opportunity at the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -2 level, the following are required:
  • Four (4) years (approximately 8,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
OR
  • Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL04, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for some education or experience.
OR
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics technology and one (1) year of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
 
To be considered for this opportunity at the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -3 level, the following are required:
  • Five (5) years (approximately 10,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical, and/or electronic work.
OR
  • Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL06, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for some education or experience.
OR
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics technology and two (2) years of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical, and/or electronic work.
 
The following are required at all EESS levels: 
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Class B CDL endorsement without air brake restriction (or acquire within 6 months from date of hire)
  • Ability to see and differentiate colors to perform electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work safely.
  • Ability to transport and carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment and move about unrestrictedly while climbing stairs/ladders/inclines and uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to work at heights exceeding 100 feet in/around/over live traffic and 600 feet above water on bridges.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and use a 700 MHZ-radio network.
  • Ability to input information into databases utilizing a computer.
  • Ability to perform basic algebraic equations.
  • Knowledge on how to operate basic testing equipment for electrical systems.
  • Class B CDL, N Tank endorsement, without restrictions E for no manual transmission and L for airbrake restriction, or ability to obtain this within 6 months of employment. 
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Journey Level Electrician (EL01, EL02, EL04, or EL07)
  • Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET)
  • A+ certification for computers and electronics
  • Washington State Flagging Card
 
Important Notes 
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.

  • The salary range listed includes the legislative approved general wage increase of 3%, effective on July 1, 2024.
  • Typical Schedule is 4 – 10-hour days, Monday – Thursday or Tuesday – Friday 5:30 am – 4:00 pm.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. 
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
