Summary: Provides direct patient care in the Labor and Delivery setting. Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition including: fetal monitoring and results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Performs general nursing duties in all Maternal-Child Health departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement activities.
Job Responsibilities:
- Able to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to AHA/AAP guidelines.
- Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
- Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
- Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation.
- Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on infants and adult females and reassessments as per policy.
- Ability to conduct antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum assessments.
- Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicted by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
- Demonstrates knowledge of fetal monitoring. Identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, co-workers and physicians.
- Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
- Coordinates and supervises patient care, as necessary.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Newborn Nursery.
- Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
- Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.
- Participates in performance improvement activities.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- In addition to scheduled days/hours, requires up to 24 hours of on-call/pay period. This is determined by current staffing levels and employee vacations.

Qualifications:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with one (1) or more years registered nurse experience within the last 48 months, and one (1) year or more of recent Labor and Delivery/Newborn experience preferred.
Certificates and Licenses:
- Current Registered Nurse license in the state of Washington.
- Current BLS Certification
- Current NRP Certification
- Current AWHONN EFM Certification
- Current STABLE Certification (as class availability allows)
- Current ALSO Certification (as class availability allows)
- ACLS certified within three (3) months of hire.
- PALS or ENPC within six (6) months of hire
- Agency staff must have current list of above listed certifications, PALS/ENPC certification is preferred.
Language Ability: Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Math Ability: Basic Math knowledge
Computer/Technical Skills: Basic computer knowledge.
