SEASONAL MAINTENANCE LABORER
Under the supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager and Public Works Director this is a part-time intermittent position that provides necessary assistance to the Buildings and Grounds Division with semi-skilled work in the repair, maintenance, and construction of parks, facilities, buildings, and grounds. Work requires the use of a variety of hand and power tools, as well as tractors and mounted equipment. Functional contacts include other buildings and grounds employees, other county employees, city employees, utility company personnel, equipment and supplies salespersons, repair shop personnel and the public.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Maintains grounds and parks by performing general grounds maintenance including mowing, pruning, planting, fertilizing, weed eating, irrigating and top-dressing.
Operation and transport of commercial mowers, tractors and other equipment as required.
Maintains records as required by the department.
PERIPHERAL FUNCTIONS
Perform local grounds litter control.
Responds to emergency situations as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of standard methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance of grounds as required by the position.
Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety standards and procedures.
Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools, as well as in the use of tractors and tractor mounted grounds equipment.
Skill in functioning as a team member.
Ability to work independently in performing regular work duties.
Ability to perform work effectively and safely in close proximity to both the public and employees in other departments.
Ability to read, understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written format.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department supervisor, co-workers, other county employees, and the general public.
Ability to perform strenuous outdoor and/or indoor labor for extended periods in all weather conditions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Applicants for this position are expected to possess the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Experience in similar positions is preferred but not required.
Valid driver’s license required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed at various county locations including facilities, buildings, grounds, and parks. Work is performed outdoors and indoors under varying conditions. Working in moderate to extreme weather conditions is required. Working alone for extended periods of time and traveling to and from job sites is required. Potential hazards exist in working with and around the equipment required to do the work, i.e., tractors, dump trucks, tilt trailers, commercial mowers, chippers, man lifts, etc.; working on or around unstable or newly constructed structures, ladders, steep roofs, underground vaults, high pressure plumbing, high voltage electrical systems, chlorine injector systems, a wide variety of chemicals such as muriatic acids, herbicides, insecticides, solvents, adhesives, industrial paints, etc. Incumbent must be able to respond to off-hour emergencies. Incumbent will be required to work nights and/or weekends as a schedule shift on occasion to accomplish projects that cannot be effectively scheduled during regular hours.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The duties of the above position require the strength, agility and stamina to perform manual labor, for extended periods of time both in and out of doors in varying climate conditions; the stamina to operate tractors, commercial mowers and other equipment for extended periods of time; the ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, or roof tops, crawl in and around tight spaces both above and below ground; shoveling, pushing pulling, stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling, twisting and the ability to lift 51 pounds. Requires hand and finger dexterity, sense of touch, gripping with fingers and hands; ability to see, hear voice conversation, and to speak.
