Natural Resource Worker | Human Resources | Skamania County
The natural resource worker will perform work as part of a team to control identified weed species throughout the county using various Integrated Pest Management methods. Duties can include finding and logging locations of weed infestations and treating with chemical, mechanical and biologic control methods such as herbicide application, hand pulling, grubbing, and cutting. Work requires use of a vehicle. Functional contacts include other weed department and county employees, the public and project partners.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Control of noxious weeds identified by the weed coordinator, weed grant coordinators and project partners using various methods including, but not limited to, mechanical, chemical and biological methods.
Using compasses, maps, handheld Geographic Position System (GPS) units and other field measurement equipment for locating weed infestations.
Takes clear field notes in a daily logbook.
Completes Invasive Plant Inventory and Invasive Site Treatment forms.
Assists in providing education of noxious weeds to public.
Maintains weed department herbicide application equipment and weed control tools in good working condition.
Provides and maintains detailed reports to Weed Coordinator or Partnership Specialist for all weed control and herbicide application for public notice and to department heads, county departments.
Operates pick-up truck, tractor and implements.
Maintains pesticide application records.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of standard methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the control of noxious weeds as required by the position.
Knowledge of occupational hazards safety standards and procedures.
Skill in use and care of tools, equipment and vehicles.
Ability to learn and identify various weed species under various growing conditions.
Ability to work well as a team member as well as independently in performing regular work duties.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department supervisors, co-workers, other county employees, project partners, and general public.
Ability to read, understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written format.
Ability to perform strenuous outdoor labor for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
Ability to learn and understand office procedures, including keyboard data entry, operation of digital cameras and handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment.
EDUCATION AND DUTIES:
High school diploma or GED, plus one year of satisfactory work experience in any natural resource field or combination of education and work experience in public relations and natural resource field.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
Ability to obtain State of Washington Pesticide Applicator License within 60 days of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Majority of work will be performed outside in various locations throughout the county, including steep or otherwise difficult terrain in all weather conditions. Exposure to pesticides and other chemicals may occur.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The duties of the above position require strength, agility and stamina to perform manual labor for extended periods of time in varying climate conditions. These duties require walking, climbing, stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling, twisting, traversing uneven terrain, working in adverse weather conditions and the ability to lift up to 40 lbs. Requires finger dexterity, sense of touch, gripping with fingers and hands, ability to see, hear voice conversations and to speak.
MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER. This is due to the use of chemicals.
