Summary
The Welder is a broadly defined position where the responsibilities are based on different levels of skills and competencies. A Welder team member is working in a face paced environment in workstations that have required cycle times. Team members work in a culture that thrives on lean manufacturing principles both on and off the production line.
Distinguishing Career Features
The Welder occupies the second and journey level within this career ladder. Weld Specialists will learn and perform common welds and become competent with GMAW by passing the Terex AWP Weld Test. Advancement to Welder requires compliance with the minimum qualifications set forth below plus demonstrated ability to plan the sequence of operations, select and set the volts and wire feed speed, perform skilled GMAW welds, read schematics, blueprints and use computers to identify weld locations, and perform quality checks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Reviews blueprints and other schematic drawings to locate weld symbols for the sub-assembly or assembly.
Arranges and sequences parts and structures of complex welds, intermittently without use of patterns or fixtures. Verifies that weldment comply with Terex AWP quality standards and product specifications.
Loads, unloads, and places into position a variety of welding fixtures, depending on the production team needs. Moves equipment into proper location to maximize safety, function, and quality.
Prepares welding equipment for proper usage.
Produces welds, exercising care to get proper penetration and avoid defects. Grinds and blends surfaces after welding to achieve acceptable visual quality and meet Terex AWP Quality Standards.
Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills
The position requires technical knowledge of GMAW techniques and special skill at setup, verification, and operation of welding equipment sufficient to comply with Terex AWP quality standards, safe work habits and product specifications. Requires knowledge of metal composition and configuration to determine the amount of volts and wire feed speed to be used. Working knowledge of production processes and equipment as well as knowledge of blueprint layouts and a range of weld symbols is preferred. Able to identify work station-related problems affecting equipment, production, or quality. Requires sufficient human relations skill to convey technical information to and maintain harmony with team members.
Abilities
Requires the ability to perform welds according to production and workflow requirements. Basic use of measuring devices and the ability to use shop mathematics, precision thickness gauges, and micrometer is preferred. Requires the ability to escalate non-conforming components. May require the ability to learn and use robotic weld equipment. Requires the ability to work as a member of a team and maintain harmonious work relationships with others. Requires the ability to observe safe work practices and handle hazardous materials according to accepted procedures. May require the ability to perform work assignments on varying schedules. Having zero quality and safety issues during the last year is a requirement for this position.
Physical Abilities
Requires ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk up to 400 yards, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) medium to heavy weights of up to 40 pounds on a regular basis without labor assisting devices. Requires ability to use full-body skill to climb (e.g. short ladders), stoop, kneel, and crouch on a continuous basis. Requires ability to perform welds from upright and prone positions. Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity including ability to grasp small devices as well as specialized tools, and visual acuity to accurately operate and apply welding equipment, read small incremental instrumentation, and read technical and safety information.
Education and Experience
One year of GMAW welding experience with steel, and aluminum and production assembly is preferred. Post-secondary technical education in welding may substitute for some experience.
Licenses and Certificates
Passing the layout and CJP test of the Terex AWP Weld Test is a requirement. AWS Welding certificate is preferred.
Working Conditions
Work is performed a heavy manufacturing environment where significant safety considerations exist from use of dangerous equipment, proximity to moving objects, full-body physical labor and handling of medium-to-heavy weight materials. Required equipment for all operations include but not limited to: steel toe shows, hearing protection and safety glasses.
