1) Partner closely with the school, PTA and WWVF2S to: - Assist with the formation of a School Garden Committee. Participate in planning sessions for school garden sustainability
- Work with the PTA to build community around the Farm to School Program. Identify & recruit volunteers, schedule and deliver Oregon Harvest for Schools Newsletters and integrate school garden activities into the school events and celebrations
- Support Garden and Cooking Club activities outside of regular classroom time (recess or after school).
- Organize and communicate the schedule of school garden use
- Bring extra garden produce to the cafeteria for use in meals. Use signage to highlight garden produce.
- Maintain the school garden as a safe and inviting outdoor class venue. Maintain school garden equipment in good repair, in order, and ready for its next use
- Organize a garden maintenance schedule and communicate with classes, PTA or community partners on implementation and opportunities to support efforts
- Coordinate with community stakeholders to plan and implement an evening family event for Athena-Weston school district focused on CTUIR First Foods and healthy living
2) Serve as the school’s garden point person by becoming familiar with garden resources and working to cultivate and maintain relationships with staff, students and parents to stimulate involvement in garden activities and use. 3) Schedule and prepare garden lessons and club activities. Preparation will include coordinating with community volunteers to ensure supervision for outdoor lessons and gathering needed materials 4) Deliver and oversee students’ hands-on activities in the garden 5) Participate in regular training offered to GEMs and participate in garden walk with supervisor twice monthly. 6) Maintain a garden journal and record activities to report regularly to the school’s principal, PTA and supervisor. Track hours spent on various activities for payroll reporting - template provided 7) Understand the composting system to help administration, kitchen and maintenance staff feel comfortable about composting and report any composting issues as soon as possible. 8) Work with school and community stakeholders to plan and coordinate farm field trips for students to experience a variety of farm activities. Work with potential partners on timelines, activities and student expectations 9) Collaborate with OSU Ag Extension Snap-Ed, the school food authority and community volunteers to present periodic cafeteria or classroom tasting events highlighting a locally grown product 10)Support local farmer and school food authorities in making and strengthening connections to increase local food purchases in the school 11)Seek methods to celebrate the diversity of the school populations’ cultural traditions in agriculture and food. |
