Summary of Duties:
The position is responsible for providing oversight and leadership for the LCD (Little Cherry Disease) or X-disease phytoplasma Extension education program. The program includes development of educational programs and outreach materials for various stakeholder groups including producers, orchard employees, partner organizations and appropriate government agencies. In partnership with industry, the LCD Extension and research effort to this point has been focused on field and lab identification, extent of infection across the region, and immediate mitigation strategies to stop the spread. This position will shift to educational programs and demonstration of a systems approach to managing orchards using practices that mitigate risk of disease outbreak, introduction, and demonstration of economic models to identify impacts associated with actions taken to mitigate infection, and co-coordination of LCD Task Force. The position will function as an integral member of the WSU Tree Fruit Extension Team and will work with a network of research and Extension faculty, tree fruit producers, allied industry, and industry partners to deliver educational programs and resources on managing LCD, X-disease and other or emerging diseases that are of economic concern to the tree fruit industry. Duties include developing curriculum, coordinating, conducting and/or evaluating the program.
In addition, the incumbent must stay current on phytosanitary / regulatory issues that impact producers and nursery producers and Horticultural Pest and Diseases Boards
Required Qualifications:
• A Bachelor's degree in a relevant extension program discipline and three (3) years of related program experience. A Masters degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
• The required bachelor's degree must be in Horticulture/Plant Science, phytopathology, virology, entomology discipline with a background in perennial tree fruit earned by the time of hire.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with industry stakeholders.
• Relevant knowledge in agriculture and experience working with commercial tree fruit or perennial crop producers.
• Demonstrated skills in developing educational content and resources across platforms.
• Demonstrated experience organizing and delivering outreach to industry stakeholders through workshops, talks and/or training sessions.
• Ability to collaborate with diverse people, researchers, Extension colleagues, staff, and students.
• Evidence of ability to develop an effective extension outreach program.
• This position requires the ability to travel and work a flexible schedule during the week including nights and weekends occasionally requiring overnight travel. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid driver's license at time of hire.
• Must have, or be able to obtain, a pesticide license within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master's degree in Horticulture (perennial cropping systems), phytopathology, virology, entomology discipline with a background in perennial tree fruit earned by the time of hire.
• Bilingual (English / Spanish).

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. This is a temporary one year project position. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment. Funding has been renewed successfully for several years and we expect funding to continue to be renewed
