Job Description Summary
Manage the General Accounting Group. Responsible for maintaining the general ledger and overseeing daily and accounting functions, including among others, all deposit accounting, equity accounting, cash accounting including daily Fed account. Oversight of lease and fixed asset accounting reporting for parent and subsidiaries of the Bank, intercompany accounting and assisting with consolidation/elimination process during month-end close. Recognition of recurring and one-time accruals, payments and cash activities through initiation of wires, and performance of cash (bank account) reconciliations. In addition, complete supporting schedules for SEC and regulatory reporting through preparation of 'Requests for Information'. Provide support in enterprise-wide initiatives and assist in other special projects, including system upgrades for Accounting Department and new products. Contribute to the efficiency of the Accounting Operations Department by participating in cross training, sharing job responsibilities, and serving as position backup for general accounting Supervisor, and participate in system implementations and merger and acquisition related activities. Develop staff through performance management, goal setting, training, and effective employee relations.
Job Details
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
Oversee and manage the general accounting functions, including among others, management of the general ledger, recognition of recurring and one-time accruals, management of fixed assets and leases, and management of the month-end close process for General Accounting. Oversee the compilation of monthly entries and account reconciliations for review by due date.
Coordinate close activities and projects with other Accounting Operations Managers. Represent GA in department meetings, initiatives such as recognition of staff, training and development activities.
Oversee all aspects of deposit accounting including coordination with Deposit Operations on clearing suspense/reconciling items. Manage CDARs, ICS and similar programs and maintain uninsured deposits report.
Prepare or review the accurate and timely preparation of statement of stockholder's equity, Parent and Subsidiary financial statements and Bank cash flow statement. Provide templates for consolidated cash flow statement.
Oversee equity accounting including dividends, share issuances, share repurchases and other activity.
Prepare daily reconciliation of cash accounts and assist with payment activity as needed.
Oversee entity level accounting including management of inter-company accounting ensuring compliance with Regulation W, settling inter-company payable/receivables, maintaining expense allocation and ensuring accurate allocation of expenses.
Support consolidation/elimination accounting as part of month-end close process. Prepare and review journal entries and develop supporting, auditable documentation.
Conduct complex general ledger account reconciliations.
Maintain accounting and desktop procedures for responsible areas/applications and oversee that desktop procedures are maintained for staff to ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and regulatory requirements.
Re-engineer existing processes to improve efficiencies and enhance controls in financial close and reporting. Incorporate new accounting standards into Accounting Operations policies, procedures and subledger systems where appropriate.
Lead review of analyzing and documenting variance analysis for General Accounting related accounts during the monthly and quarterly accounting cycle and present to management.
Oversee all aspects of Fixed Asset accounting in the BNA system and Lease Accounting in the Costar system. Oversee outsourced lease accounting function to ensure proper accounting treatment including new leases and renewals are set-up properly. Review quarterly for changes to fixed assets requiring write-offs as well as any lease impairments or restructurings.
Oversee the maintenance of the general ledger Chart of Accounts for General Accounting.
Provide technical accounting consultations in assigned areas of responsibility including GAAP research, documentation in memos/white papers and presentation to management or business areas in conjunction with Deputy and Corporate Controller. Lease accounting including restructuring and lease abandonment/termination are key areas of responsibility.
Primary owner of accounting policy for General Accounting related areas. Expert in General Accounting areas of GAAP such as business combinations, fixed asset capitalization and discontinued operations accounting.
Provide support in enterprise-wide initiatives and assist in other special projects, including system upgrades for Accounting Department, help lead merger and acquisition related activities, and implementation and mapping of new products. Work with Deposit Operations and consultants to implement new products and acquired deposits to IBS system and PeopleSoft general ledger.
Help lead purchase accounting or divestiture accounting for deposits, fixed asset, leases and other areas of responsibility.
Work with the bank's independent and internal auditors and examiners in their quarterly and annual reviews and audits, coordinating accounting related inquiries and requests.
Contribute to the efficiency of the Accounting Operations Department by participating in cross training, sharing job responsibilities, and serving as position backup for general accounting Supervisor.
Review detailed schedules for SEC, tax, and regulatory reporting purposes.
Key contributor in maintaining the bank's SOX program.
Build strong working relationships with internal control stakeholders throughout the organization particularly with Deposit Operations and Corporate Real Estate teams.
Communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing up and down the organization including with key constituents in business areas and corporate support groups.
Develop staff through performance management, goal setting, training, and effective employee relations. Build a highly effective team with in-depth knowledge for their responsible areas capable of providing excellent customer service and who act as partners to other groups within the bank. Ensure knowledge depth of each function by extensive cross-training.
Manage the staff's participation in bank's business resumption planning, prepare test scripts and provide support in disaster recovery testing.
Perform ad hoc projects as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of 8 years of related work experience (or equivalent experience), some public accounting and/or experience with financial institutions preferred.
Intercompany and purchase accounting, close process leadership, process improvements and supervisory experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP required.
Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of Accounting Operations.
Strong written and oral communication and ability to relate and communicate effectively across all levels of staff inside and outside the department.
Hands-on, energetic, organized, team player with proven ability to adapt quickly in a changing environment and facilitate change, multitask effectively and work independently.
Ability to prioritize projects, quickly determine the requirements to accomplish them, and analyze the processes to figure out how to simplify, automate, and improve them for increased efficiency.
Must possess sound judgment, good decision-making ability, and a high level of decision quality, problem solving and analytical abilities.
High attention to detail.
CPA preferred
Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
Proficient with General Ledger and MS Office, advanced Excel skills preferred, and willingness to learn other software as needed.

Must be able to communicate via telephone and possess dexterity to include filing documents, reaching and bending.
