This job opportunity is limited to qualified, available workers that are currently eligible to work in the United States, per federal regulation. Crops/Commodities: Cherries, apples, pears, and grapes. Job Duties: CHERRY HARVEST: The worker will hand harvest cherries. The worker will pick by grasping fruit with their hands and removing from the tree in a motion so as not to harm adjacent buds on the tree branches. Furthermore, fruit must be placed into buckets or totes with care as to not bruise or damage the fruit. Picking will be performed by color, or color and size as well as by defects which would render the fruit unmarketable. Such defects include but are not limited to bird pecks, limb rubs, splits, and sunburn. The harvest supervisor will show all workers the correct way to pick cherries to reach the quality objectives. The worker will attach harness, bucket or tote and pick low hanging fruit while standing on the ground and higher fruit while standing on a ladder. The worker will carry a harness, bucket, or tote of up to 30 lbs. Fruit then, depending on circumstance, may either be transferred to a larger tote or bin or left in the buckets or totes. Workers must possess ability to pick up, handle a 6 ft., 8ft., or 10 ft., orchard ladder weighing up to 40 pounds. APPLES/PEARS HARVEST: The worker will hand harvest apples and pears. The worker will attach harness, bucket or bag and pick low hanging fruit while standing on the ground and higher fruit while standing on a ladder. Worker will harvest numerous varieties of grapes according to established company procedures accounting for difference in the treatment of different varieties. The fruit will be placed in either a plastic tub or stainless steel bin or other container. Care must be exercised at all times to prevent breaking of grapes and to maximize the quality of the fruit. Some workers may be required to examine harvested fruit and sort out any fruit not meeting the grade, color and size specifications. THINNING: Thinning is a manual process used to control the size and quality of growing fruit. The worker must possess ability to pick up, handle a 6 ft., 8ft., or 10 ft., orchard ladder weighing up to 40 pounds. Furthermore, the worker must be able to use scissor-like clippers. This process requires the employee to remove, in some cases not limited to the smallest fruit blossom, bud and/or identifiable fruit from within a cluster of other fruits. Workers will be expected to be able to identify and remove fruit that is misshapen, damaged and/or with other quality problems as directed by supervisors. Thinning may be performed from a motorized platform and/or from the ground or a ladder. TRAINING: Training is a process in which the fruit tree or grape vine is manipulated to increase yield and/or quality. The worker must possess the ability to pick up, handle a 6ft., 8ft., or 10ft., orchard ladder weighing up to 40 pounds. Training may be performed from a motorized platform and/or from the ground or ladder. Some example training tasks are but not limited to: - Tying, taping or clipping apple, pear, or cherry limbs to wires. - Tying up or down apple, pear, or cherry limbs. - Tying, taping, or clipping grape canes to wires. - Training and limb positioning of grape vines and apples and cherry trees - Grape vine shoot thinning, sucker removal, cluster thinning, shoot positioning, hedging, or leaf removal. Propping and supporting apple and pear trees. - Moving wires in grapes for light exposure - Positioning, gluing twine in place for tree limb positioning PRUNING: Pruning numerous varieties of apple, pears, and cherry trees along with both wine and juice grape vines according to established company procedures based on the difference in the treatment of different varieties. Work will be performed on trees or vines for long periods of time using a variety of pruning equipment including but not limited to hand shears, hand loppers, power pruners, chainsaws, hand saws. Furthermore, the worker must possess ability to pick up, handle a 6ft., 8ft., or 10ft., orchard ladder weighing up to 40 pounds. Pruning may be done from the ground or a ladder up to 10 feet in height or from a motorized platform. Workers may be required to selectively prune only trees of a certain size and color as instructed by the crew supervisor. Workers are expected to possess or acquire pruning skills in order to identify and remove stubs or broken branches, downward-growing branches, branches which rub against each other, shaded interior branches, dead or diseased wood and shoots/suckers with hand pruning saws and clippers. Other Job Specifications Include: 1. The worker will care for young non-producing fruit trees and grape vines including but not limited to weeding, hoeing, trunk painting, hand fertilizing and growth selection by hand and clipping. 2. Hand thinning of apple, pear and cherry trees and grape vines to ensure proper fruit load on tree or vine. 3. Pruning of apple, pear and cherry trees and grape vines. 4. Training of apple, pear, and cherry trees to trellis, including clipping and tying limbs and shoots to wire. 5. Training of apple, pear and cherry trees to bamboo or steel stakes. 6. Training of grape vines to trellis, including clipping and tying canes to wire. 7. Training and cane positioning of grape vines. 8. Training and limb positioning of apple, pear, and cherry trees. 9. Provide general labor to assist in the establishment of orchards and vineyards by clearing the property or garbage, weeds, debris, etc., the planting of trees or vines, building trellis, irrigation installation and repair, and the spreading of composted material as well as any other labor considered necessary for the efficient structure of orchard and vineyard properties. 10. Care of trees and vines during the growing process. Recognize tree disease such as of blighted branches in apples and gummosis in cherries. 11. Harvest preparation and support including but not limited to: the spreading of liners for bins, distributing harvest totes or distributing bins into the orchard or vineyard. 12. Propping and supporting of apple and pear trees. 13. Pruning and thinning may be done from the ground or ladder up to 10 feet in height, or from a motorized platform. 14. Repair sprinklers on overhead cooling system and under tree irrigation; change irrigation on schedule. 15. Picking numerous varieties of apples, pears, cherries, and grapes according to established company procedures accounting for difference in the treatment of different varieties. 16. Hand harvesters may be required to selectively pick only fruit of a certain color and/or size as instructed by the supervisor. 17. Hand harvesters may be required to selectively cull fruit because of defects such as but not limited to sunburn, bird pecks or limb rub as instructed by the supervisor. 18. Hand harvesters will be required to handle fruit carefully and not bruise or damage fruit when it is placed in the bin. 19. Observation of bruised, damaged or cull fruit by the supervisor will result in a bad bin mark and after three bad bin marks, the employees will receive disciplinary action up to and including termination. A bad bin mark occurs when a bin is inspected and a significant number of culls, bruised or damaged are found by the supervisors. 20. Farm clean up tasks to include picking up garbage around orchards, vineyards, and farm structures. Also includes removing old string, tape, wire, irrigation components, posts, general debris, etc. from orchards and vineyards. 21. Workers must be adept at safely placing and using ladders. Much of the work will be done from an aluminum ladder up to 10 feet in height. 22. Hand tools, such as pruning loppers, shears, thinning clippers, stem clippers and/or picking bags will be utilized. 23. Perform mouse, gopher, and other rodent control. 24. Trap and destroy pests, such as moles, gophers, and mice, using pesticides. 25. Install and remove mylar (color-up) reflective material. 26. Install, remove and move aside white tarp (Extende) reflective material. 27. Deploy and retract over-tree bird, rain, and shade covers. 28. Installation and removal of grow tubes and budding tape. 29. Operate or tend equipment used in agricultural production and field preparation such as tractors, irrigation equipment, all-terrain vehicles, trucks, and other commonly used equipment in agriculture. 30. Operate tractor and/trucks to mow, weed spray and move bin/tote trailers in the orchard and fields. 31. Install monitor, maintain and repair the irrigation system for a specific area of the orchard. 32. Operate trucks to carry farm equipment, crops and Workers. Employees that want to be drivers must possess a valid driver's license. The driver’s license is not a pre-hire job requirement. They will drive workers from living quarters to work site and vice versa and provide one weekly trip to workers to purchase groceries. 33. Assist with cleaning, sweeping, inventorying, organizing in the farm shop. 34. Spray fertilizer or pesticide solutions to control insects, fungus and weed growth, and diseases, using hand sprayers. Load and mix chemicals in addition to operating tractors pulling air blast sprayers. Workers will either have a valid pesticide license or supervised by someone with a valid pesticide license. 35. Assist with checker duties. Performing quality control and administrating support out in the field at harvest time for cherries, apples and pears. HOUSING Employer agrees to provide or secure housing for the H-2A workers and those workers in corresponding employment who are not reasonably able to return to their residence at the end of the work day. TRANSPORTATION The Employer will offer transportation to and from employer provided housing to the work site, at no cost to workers who qualify. The workers will be picked up at the housing locations; the time of pick-up depends on variable factors, such as weather, field location, job duties, etc. They will be returned to the housing in the same manner after their shift is done; time varying depending on the same factors. MEALS The Employer will furnish cooking facilities with working appliances, hot water, a place to prepare food at no cost to employees occupying employer-provided housing. Employees will purchase their own food and prepare their own meals. In the event that it becomes necessary for the employer to provide 3 meals a day to the workers, the employer will deduct $15.46 per day, or the current allowable charge as designated by the DOL from each worker’s pay. THREE-FOURTHS Employer agrees to offer the worker employment for a total number of work hours equal to at least three fourths of the workdays of the total period beginning with the first workday after the arrival of the worker at the place of employment or the advertised contractual first date of need, whichever is later, and ending on the expiration date specified in the work contract or in its extensions, if any.
