DNV is seeking a Senior HVDC System Design Consultant who will help our customers in North America to develop cutting edge HVDC transmission solutions to secure and improve the affordability, sustainability and reliability of their high voltage electricity transmission portfolios.
Together we deliver specialized and innovative consultancy services to our customers, which are mainly transmission system operators, power utilities, renewable developers, transmission developers and industries.
You will be involved in national (and international) projects where you will also collaborate in and with other teams within DNV such as offshore wind, permitting, environmental impact analysis, markets & risk.
You will be part of the Power System Advisory team which has its base in Dallas, Texas. Your work location would preferably be at one of our DNV offices in Dallas (TX), Portland (OR), Seattle (WA), Toronto, or Montreal (CA).
What You'll Do
Develop conceptual HVDC and AC transmission system designs, feasibility studies, CAPEX OPEX and availability assessments to address our customer's transmission needs
Perform electrical design and general arrangements of HVDC systems and substations,
Contribute to preparing specifications and tender documentation
Witness commissioning tests such as type, factory- or site acceptance tests (FAT/SAT)
Develop (or contribute to) clear and high-quality reports and commercial offers
Contribute to developing our service portfolio / roadmap and the annual plan by monitoring and anticipating market developments
Demonstrate industry engagement by participating in thought leadership, and represent DNV at conferences, in the technical literature and in standardization initiatives such as IEEE, IEC and CIGRE
Perform business development with existing and new DNV Customers
Coach junior consultants and help them develop their technical career path
Position Qualifications
What is Required
Master's degree and/or a PhD in Electrical Engineering or similar, preferably with a specialization in HV, power electronics and/or control
Minimum 7 years of solid work experience in the HVDC industry
Broad understanding of VSC-MMC HVDC technology and its applications
Familiarity with types of studies and software tools required for VSC-HVDC system integration
Knowledge within US regulatory and planning frameworks and standards (NERC/FERC, IEEE P2800)
Involvement in HVDC related standardization initiatives (IEEE, IEC, CIGRE, CENELEC)
Existing and established network of system operators, utilities, vendors and developers
Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time visiting customers, conferences, factories, and sites
Excellent technical communication skills (both verbal and written), organization and grammar skills are essential
We conduct a pre-employment background check and drug screen
What is Preferred
Experience with multi-terminal HVDC and fault clearing strategies, as well as solutions to enable multi-vendor interoperability
Industrial simulation software experience used for the analysis of HVDC system behavior such as PSS-E, PSCAD, PSLF and others
Experience working with customers in North America
